Day 8 - Ottawa Parliament Hill -> Rideau Canal

After the thousand islands, we travelled another 1-2 hours to Ottawa, the capital of Canada. English and Fench are the official languages here so the road signs are bilingual. We only visited one main attraction, the Parliament Hill before travelling to Montreal. Though only one attaction, it was worthwhile and sufficient as the sights were spectacular. Today was a public holiday, Victoria Day.

Beautiful Centre Block with the peace clock tower in Parliament Hill with its beautiful and castle like architecture.

Parliament Hill (French: Colline du Parlement), literally on elevated ground, colloquially known as The Hill, is an area of Crown land on the southern banks of the Ottawa River in Downtown Ottawa, Ontario. Its Gothic revival suite of buildings serves as the home of the Parliament of Canada.

The Centre Block was destroyed by fire on 3 February 1916. Eleven years later, the new tower was completed and dedicated as the Peace Tower, in commemoration of the Canadians who had lost their lives during the First World War. The centre block now houses the House of Commons, the Senate and serves as an office building for MPs and Senators.

Langevin Block (French: Édifice Langevin), an office building next to Parliament Hill, home of the Privy Council Office and Office of the Prime Minister. It is the working headquarters of the executive branch of the Canadian government.

Our ex-colleague met up with us here and brought us to the Rideau Canal nearby. The guide only briefly mentioned it on our way out to Montreal. We have a special guide. Haha! En route to the Rideau Canal.

Hotel Fairmont Chateau Laurier, Ottawa - another unique and beautiful hotel in French Gothic Châteauesque style to complement the adjacent Parliament buildings. The hotel is above the Rideau Canal locks and overlooks the Ottawa River.

The Rideau Canal, also known as the Rideau Waterway, connects the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, on the Ottawa River to the city of Kingston, Ontario, on Lake Ontario. It is 202 kilometres in length. The name Rideau, French for "curtain," is derived from the curtain-like appearance of the Rideau River's twin waterfalls where they join the Ottawa River. The canal system uses sections of major rivers, including the Rideau and the Cataraqui, as well as some lakes.

The canal was opened in 1832 as a precaution in case of war with the United States. It remains in use today primarily for pleasure boating, with most of its original structures intact, operated by Parks Canada. The locks on the system open for navigation in mid-May and close in mid-October. It is the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America, and in 2007 it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In winter, a section of the Rideau Canal passing through central Ottawa becomes officially the world's largest skating rink.

The Centennial Flame commemorates Canada’s 100th anniversary as a Confederation. The Flame was first lit as the climax of the centennial celebrations of January 1, 1967. It is fuelled by natural gas and surrounded by a fountain whose ledge contains the shields of 12 of Canada’s provinces and territories—Nunavut is absent as it was not created until 1999. It was originally erected as a temporary monument, but due to great public support it still stands today. It is located near the Queen's Gates (the centre gate), in front of the stairs leading to the Peace Tower and Centre Block.

The Centennial Flame is encompassed by a fountain into which many visitors to Parliament Hill throw coins for luck. That change is gathered, washed, dried and sorted by maintenance before it is put into a government bank account. From there the money is given to the winner of the Centennial Flame Research Award.

Because of the fire that burns above the water, the fountain doesn't freeze, even in the middle of the winter.
