Day 3 - Bus ride to Aso West station -> Ropeway to Mt Aso阿蘇山/ crater of Mt. Nakadake, Aso -> Bento Lunch -> Bus to Kurokawa 黒川

Thank God it was very sunny and hot today. The last time we same here it was drizzling. As the weather was good, the ropeway should be operating. It will stop operation if it is windy.
En route to Mount Aso

Today, the crater is spouting a lot of smoke angrily and it was very obvious even from a distance when the bus was climbing uphill. As the weather was good, we could see many cattle grazing on the grass plains. All out for some sunshine, I guess.

Bought 2 return ropeway tickets at 1000yen each upon arrival at ropeway staion after 45mins bus journey. Very expensive for a short ride up the crater.
Next ropeway was at 1305 hours. It runs quite regularly at 10-15mins interval.

After 5mins, we arrived at the Crater Station and this is how the Asosan ropeway station looked like

En route to the crater

Not a pretty sight, unlike the one at Mt Owakudani at Hakone. Everything was brown and dry and there are no shops or eateries around. It is just the brown crater ....

The magnificent caldera of Mount Nakadake. It has a diameter of up to 25 kilometers and a circumference of over 100 kilometers. Very active today , spouting lots of smoke.

Around the area

Scenic view from the crater area. the ropeway station can be seen on the left

A Asosan Ropeway on its way up

We had our bento lunch at the Aso ropeway station after visiting the crater. The bento tasted yummy.

Aso Ropeway Station. Also the bus station to Kurokawa. Our Ryokan in Kurokawa helped us reserve the seats to Kurokawa from this bus station on the Kysusanko Odan bus. Departure time was 1416hrs. Fare was 1600yen/person. The driver will call your name if you had a reservation. Like any bus in Kyushu, you need to take a bus ticket which registered the bus stop number when you board the bus. Pay the driver at the destination. Fare will be indicated on the display board above the driver.
Timetable and bus fare for the highway bus from Kumamoto to Beppu can be found in this link.

Took some shots before leaving for Kurokawa. Aso shrine

En route back to Aso Station to Kurokawa.

Mt Komezuka in autumn. It was very green in summer.

Beautiful plains
