The original plan was to take the Limited Express Aso Boy to Aso Station but as it was fully booked, we had to take the local train on JR Hohi line to Aso. It was a two car diesel train. The journey to Higoozu will take 38mins.
At Higoozu station, we had to transfer to another train. This train did one switchback en route to Aso Station.

Finally, after another 56mins, we arrived at Aso Station

Aso Station. Bus ticket to Mt Aso Ropeway Station (540yen) can be bought from a vending machine from the room on the left. Alternatively, you can pay cash to the driver at the destination. The bus stop to West Aso (or Ropeway) station is in the middle.

Went to the nearby supermarket to buy bento for lunch. It was quite a big supermarket selling many local vegetables and products.
Delicious Bento - only 500yen.
When we walked back from the market to catch the 1210 Kyusanko odan 阿蘇登山線 bus, there was a very long queue and we could not get on the 1210 bus. This is the Kyusanko odan 阿蘇登山線 bus to Mt Aso. It does not have luggage compartment. As the first bus was full, the bus company sent another one after another 10min wait ... Link for the timetable for this bus.
