Continuing our way to Lilau Square. Most of the streets in Macau are very narrow. But there is a mini public bus that will come this way - bus #18.
Bus Stop outside Lilau Square
Here we are - Lilau Square. Largo do Lilau is situated in the old “Christian quarter” where the Portuguese first settled in Macao.
This area is surrounded by Portuguese style buildings and is therefore an area representing Macao’s unique urban style and features.
Residential buildng in Lilau Square
The Square was one of the first settlements for the Portuguese at the earliest phase, "Lilau" means "mountain spring". The buildings in this area are built in the Chinese-Portuguese style with a rich reminiscent atmosphere. The ground water of Lilau used to be the main source of natural spring water in Macao. The Portuguese popular phrase: "One who drinks from Lilau never forgets Macao" expresses the locals' nostalgic attachment to Lilau Square.
Many residential buildings around the square

Mandarin House, situated on Travessa de António da Silva, is just across the narrow road from the Lilau Square
Situated on Travessa de António da Silva, the Mandarin's House is a traditional 4,000square metre Chinese-style compound made up of several courtyard houses featuring a mix of Chinese and Western detailing and one of the 2 only traditional Chinese residenttail houses in Macau. The Mandarin's House was the residence of prominent Chinese literary figure Zheng Guanying who promoted major historic changes in China by writing a book here. In addition to its historic value, the Mandarin's House is a fine example of Qing Dynasty architecture. This is currently under renovation.
